Job Purpose:

The main purpose of the position is to ensure that the mating/artificial insemination, heat detection & Hormonal Protocols are followed. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that the cow get timely pregnant.

Main Tasks & Accountabilities:

Breeding & Insemination:

• Heat Detection
• Prepare the cows for insemination
• Perform the Insemination
• Dry off
• Ensure Insemination is followed vigorously as per the company protocols

Hormonal Protocols:

• Pre-synch & Ovisynch protocols as per directions from the Management
• Ensure protocols are followed

Animal Breeding & Welfare:

• Implementing good practices of animal Breeding and welfare; ensure all animals in heat are identified and inseminated as per farm protocols, and all animals moved/handled in an acceptable, quiet and calm way
• Ensure animal Breeding and wellbeing
• Identify the cows in heat and due for insemination
• Documenting animal Breeding reports in prescribed format at scheduled intervals

Stock Management:

• Ensuring proper care and supervision is exercised during mating, calving and recovery from calf birth
• Reporting all instances that require further action
• Ensure good stock management practices are duly followed
Stock Management – Recording:

• Ensure record keeping of daily breeding activities
• Observe and recording cows in heat
• Observe and recording cows calved
• Observant when with the cows, documenting any information that may be useful, for example, cows that look like they may be coming in heat period
• Ensure recording any other associated information as per farm systems manual or as instructed by veterinarian
• Ensure record book is readable, accurate and contains up to date information which then is used for updating other records.
• Record all breeding of the animals in strict adherence to farm policy

HACCP/other compliances:

• Ensure hygiene standards are maintained through the farm especially in the herd enclosures and feeding area
• Ensure no breaches of HACCP/ISO/environmental requirements

Health and Safety:

• Understand and ensure meeting the obligations of health and safety requirements of employment legislation
• Ensure compliance of all H&S policies related to farms, including wearing of helmets and other personal protective equipment by the staff
• Identify and contain/minimize health hazards among livestock
• Maintain an event register including an accident summary report (any accident or near miss accident, injury or non-injury, possible hazards
• Comply with health and safety requirements of employment legislation
• Comply with health and safety policies and procedures

People management and reporting responsibilities:

• Ensure accurate and up to date, daily, weekly, monthly records as required by the management
• Ensure tasks are understood by the team members, and performed responsibly and diligently
• Help others in the team if needed; Support relief staff in their duties
• Effective coordination across functions to achieve targets
