Job Purpose:
• The main purpose of this position is to ensure smooth feeding operations at the farm.
• The incumbent is required to focus on feed budget, nutrition requirement of different groups of cattle as directed by the nutritionist, proper mixing of fodder and timely feeding of livestock
Main Tasks & Accountabilities:
Feeding Livestock:
• Assist with feed budget calculations using data collected during farm walks
• Ensure cattle stock is segregated into different groups according to their nutrition requirement determined by the nutritionist
• Supervise allocation of daily feed to livestock groups within bounds of the feed budget
• Assist with completing feed budgets as required
• Assist with the feeding of stock as directed by nutritionist/GM-farms
• Collect accurate farm related information through regular farm walks
• Use farm budget as a tool to support daily feed management decisions
• Ensure cattle stock is adequately fed and nutrition requirements met
Stock Management:
• Ensue that adequate stock of fodder and nutrients are available for mixing and feeding the livestock as per the feed budget
• Ensure that the fodder/nutrients used are fit for consumption by the livestock
• Ensure good stock management practices are duly followed for feed/additional nutrients
• Raise healthy calves which attain target weight band
• Raise young well grown stock (nutrition requirement met)
HACCP/other compliances:
• Design and ensure hygiene standards are maintained through the farm especially feed management
• Ensure no breaches of HACCP/ISO/environmental requirements
Health and Safety:
• Understand and ensure meeting the obligations of health and safety requirements of employment legislation.
• Ensure compliance of all H&S policies related to farms, including wearing of helmets and other personal protective equipment by the staff
• Identify and contain/minimize health hazards among livestock and raw milk produced
• Maintain an event register including an accident summary report (any accident or near miss accident, injury or non-injury, possible hazards
• Comply with health and safety requirements of employment legislation
• Comply with health and safety policies and procedures
