The Heavy Plant Mechanic will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and servicing of heavy plant equipment used in construction projects. This role requires a thorough understanding of mechanical systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical components of various types of heavy machinery. The successful candidate will work closely with project managers and site supervisors to ensure that all equipment is operational and compliant with safety regulations.
Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct regular inspections and diagnostics on heavy plant machinery to identify issues.
Perform routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication.
Repair or replace defective parts using hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities performed on each piece of equipment.
Collaborate with other mechanics and technicians to troubleshoot complex mechanical problems.
Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations while working on-site.
Provide training to junior mechanics or apprentices as needed.
Respond promptly to breakdowns or emergency repairs during operational hours.
Assist in the planning of maintenance schedules to minimize downtime.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience Required
Proven experience as a Heavy Plant Mechanic or similar role within the construction industry.
In-depth knowledge of hydraulic systems, electrical systems, engines, transmissions, and undercarriage components.
Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and software for troubleshooting machinery issues.
Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Relevant certifications (e.g., NVQ Level 3 in Plant Maintenance) are preferred but not mandatory.
Valid driver’s license; additional licenses for operating heavy machinery are advantageous.
