Detailed Profile

My name is Hisham Abdelrhim, I am 45 years old. I am a paediatrcian with interest in neonates. I have been working in the field of paediatrics and neonatology since May 2002.
I Graduated in 1998 from the medical school of Ain Shams University, Egypt, I was awarded a master’s degree in paediatrics from the same university in2004. I got the MRCPCH, London in 2009.
I moved to the UK in Jan 2011, in 2012 I joined the national paediatric training program at the level of ST4, I was trained in the tertiary NICU of Bristol University, South West of England for 3 years as a senior middle grade doctor followed by one year as a senior clinical fellow in the same neonatal unit. I have got the CESR (Cert of Eligibility for the Specialist Register) in paediatrics, in May 2018, since then I have been doing locum neonatal jobs as a consultant/Senior Neonatal Registrar
I am registered as a consultant in the Egyptian Medical Syndicate.
I am competent and confident doing and teaching all paediatric and neonatal procedures, have been exposed to a very wide spectrum of acute and non-acute neonatal problems. I am competent in using all kinds of ventilation from nasal CPAP and non-invasive ventilation to the conventional ventilation, high frequency oscillation and pressure support ventilation, I am very experienced in treating cases of persisting pulmonary hypertension and using nitric oxide therapy. I have long experience in the management of neonatal surgical emergencies like congenital diaphragmatic hernia, TOF, imperforate anus, gastroschisis.and gut malrotation Having worked in the neonatal unit of Bristol university (the biggest cooling Centre in Europe) for 4 years has given me a lot of experience in using therapeutic hypothermia in management of HIE babies
During my training in the UK I have been actively involved in all pillars of clinical governance. I have led many audit cycles and quality improvement projects that led to significant changes in the local practice, many of these projects were presented in national and international conferences and published in well recognized journals inside and outside the UK (British Journal of Hospital Medicine, BMJ, The Indian Journal of Paediatrics and the American Journals of Case Reports).
In terms of the research, I have a passion in research, my first research exposure was back home when I conducted a lab-based research in neonatal seizures for 2 years, I was awarded a masters’ degree upon completing and discussing this research. During my training in the UK I have not got a chance to do research posts however I acted as a co-investigator in many of the local trials like the Gene Study, WHEAT Trial and the Xenon/Cooling Trial. I Actively participated in the randomization process, consenting parents, and collection of research samples (umbilical cord and blood).
I have conducted my own research activities in the form of retrospective observational surveys to question the value and quality of some of the common practices in the neonatal unit, they were presented in national and international conferences and were also published in medical journals. The first one was about the ability to recognize the neonatal bilious vomiting among medical staff, nurses, midwives and parents. The second was retrospective observational survey about babies who had lumbar puncture over a year and 10 years in a tertiary and a level 2 units, respectively.
In terms of teaching experience, I have been actively participating in the local teaching program, I have taught undergraduates and postgraduates, medical and nursing staff, in small group, seminars, bedside and as an observer in simulation training. I have got excellent feedback from different audience. As one of the main speakers I presented my audits and surveys in international paediatric and neonatal conferences (Egypt, Italy, Creszh and Spain).
In Bristol I used to transport babies for short trips to and from the childrens hospital for surgery, however, I have not done a proper transport post yet. I have plans to attend neonatal transport training courses.
At the personal level I am flexible, good team worker and I have very good communication skills. I have had a lot of positive feedback from my senior, junior colleagues, nurses and midwives, I am a well-rounded doctor who worked in several places.
Since I graduate from medical school I have been moving a lot between hospitals and countries to learn and continuously, develop my knowledge and experience, but it is time to establish myself in a good place , devote myself to, learn and share in building guidelines which will persist…If I was lucky and got this opportunity I will aim to develop the following skills and knowledge:

-Developing interest in neonatal neurology and therapeutic hypothermia and neonatal education
-Neonatal Echo skills and competency in running neonatal cardiology clinic
-Obtain a degree or extended course in medical education
-Get actively involved in leading a proper research project or trial, may also attend few training courses and workships to enhancer my research skills
-Will aim at developing interest in neonatal neurology and neonatal education
Please see below the details of updated CV hope it finds your interest
.

Yours faithfully

Hisham Abdelrhim

Master’s degree in pediatrics, 2004—degree: very good
Research and Experience:
Conducted a laboratory-based research (2002-2004) on the diagnostic and prognostic values of serum prolactin in neonatal seizures. My responsibilities were consenting the parents, collecting samples, clerking the patients and writing the review of literature. The thesis was discussed and accepted completion of the research.

I have conducted 2 retrospective observational quality assessment studies at a District General Hospital (UK). Processed for publication this summer 2019, presented at the national and international conferences as posters (2016):

1-To evaluate the ability of health workers, and parents to identify bilious vomit in newborns. Participants were asked to identify bile colours from a colour-chart of 8 green/yellow colour options. The study showed still there is significant proportion of the health workers misidentify the color of bile. Females were abler to correctly identify the color of bile.

2- A retrospective review of the records of all term babies who had LP done in our unit over the last 10 years, looking for the indications, course of the disease, laboratory and clinical outcome. None of the clinically appearing normal babies with raised CRP had meningitis. None of the babies who had LP done <72 h had meningitis. All meningitis cases were significantly symptomatic prior to the LP test.

-I have participated in large national studies running in our units, like the Gene Study, SIFT trial, SPRING, ELVIS Trial and Xenon trial via collecting samples, consenting parents, or identifying patients fulfilling the criteria for recruitment and calling the research team to randomize them
I am currently participating in the WHEAT trial as a co-investigator at the neonatal unit of the city hospital of Birmingham

WHEAT: withholding Enteral feeds Around packed red cell Transfusion to prevent necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm neonates. It is a multi-center, randomized point of care trial. This means that WHEAT uses information that is already being collected by doctors and nurses as part of day to day care, which makes it much simpler and easier to take part in.

Teaching and training experience:
Relevant teaching experience
I have been involved in Clinical teaching since my graduation. I have received excellent feedback in from all. (will be provided)
I have taught undergraduates, junior colleges, nurses and midwives in small group, didactic, scenario and bedside teaching. I have lead formal departmental teaching, and journal clubs. I enjoy teaching practical and interpretation skills to junior colleagues formally and as part of the normal working day. I like to use the problem-based approach as a method of teaching.
I have developed my own techniques in teaching parents. I enjoy teaching parents through counselling and updating them on the neonatal unit I have become skilled in explaining medical issues clearly in an accessible manner. I have taught children through pictures, play and demonstration
