The AV Technician is responsible for the installation, setup, and maintenance of audiovisual equipment. They support AV Engineers in executing AV projects by handling the installation of displays, audio systems, cabling, and control devices in various venues.
Key Responsibilities:
Install AV systems including screens, projectors, speakers, microphones, video conferencing devices, and control systems.
Pull and terminate cables for AV systems (HDMI, VGA, Cat6, fiber optic, etc.).
Assist in testing and troubleshooting AV systems to ensure proper functionality.
Perform basic configuration of AV equipment under the direction of AV Engineers.
Provide technical support during events and meetings, ensuring AV systems function as required.
Conduct routine maintenance of AV systems and equipment, troubleshooting minor issues, and ensuring systems are updated.
Collaborate with the AV team to ensure projects are completed within time and budget constraints.
Assist with system upgrades and modifications as directed by the AV Engineer or Project Manager.
Maintain accurate inventory of AV equipment, tools, and materials.
Hardware Knowledge:
Displays: Understanding different types of displays such as LED, LCD, projectors, and video walls.
Audio Systems: Knowledge of speakers, amplifiers, microphones, mixers, and audio processors.
Video Equipment: Cameras, video switchers, scalers, and video conferencing equipment.
Control Systems: Familiarity with control systems like Crestron, AMX, and Extron.
Networking: Basics of networking, including routers, switches, and wireless access points.
Cables and Connectors: Various types of AV cabling (HDMI, SDI, XLR, etc.) and connectors.
Software Knowledge:
Control System Programming: Software used for programming control systems (e.g., Crestron Toolbox, AMX NetLinx Studio).
Audio and Video Editing: Tools like Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, and Audacity.
Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Software: Configuring and tuning audio DSPs (e.g., QSC Q-SYS, Biamp Tesira).
Room Booking Systems: Software like Condeco, Teem, and Robin.
Collaboration Platforms: Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Webex, and other video conferencing software.
Installation and Setup:
Rack Assembly: Skills in assembling and wiring AV equipment racks.
Calibration: Audio and video calibration techniques for optimal performance.
Integration: Integrating AV systems with existing infrastructure, including IT and building management systems.
Troubleshooting and Maintenance
Diagnostics Tools: Use of tools like multimeters, cable testers, and network analyzers.
Firmware Updates: Keeping equipment firmware up to date.
Problem-Solving: Identifying and resolving issues with AV systems.
Standards and Protocols:
AV Standards: Knowledge of standards like HDMI, HDBaseT, and DisplayPort.
IP Protocols: Understanding of IP-based AV distribution (e.g., AV over IP).
Soft Skills:
Customer Service: Interacting with clients to understand and meet their AV needs.
Project Management: Basic project management skills to oversee installations and upgrades.
Documentation: Keeping detailed records of installations, configurations, and maintenance activities.
Strong technical aptitude with attention to detail.
Basic troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for AV systems.
Ability to work well in a team and under pressure.
Strong communication skills to support both technical and non-technical clients.
Physically capable of handling AV equipment and performing manual labor when needed.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent; certification in AV or electronics is a plus.
1-3 years of experience working with AV systems and equipment installation.
Familiarity with AV systems such as projectors, audio systems, control panels, and video conferencing tools.
Basic understanding of AV signal flow and equipment wiring (HDMI, Cat6, XLR).
Ability to read and interpret technical schematics and diagrams.
