Detailed Profile

To whom it may concern,

I am 57 years old, Swedish national, with 31years of clinical experience as a surgeon that is open to new positions matching my profile. I am a board-certified specialist in General Surgery since 2004. I also hold a European board certification in Abdominal Transplant and an equivalent in HPB surgery. I am a registered specialist in Germany (Fachartz), Sweden, Norway, Denmark and in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I have been working 11 years after I became a specialist in tertiary referral hospitals with more than 1000 beds and anywhere from 6500 to 17 000 employees. I did 4 years of my residency at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital and 3.5 years as intern and resident in larger county hospitals (Borås and Varberg) with 350-500 beds. I have thereafter been working both in the private as well as in the public healthcare systems in different European countries, the US and in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The last 23 months I have worked in the GCC region’s largest private hospital in Riyadh, KSA. Immediately before that I worked 3.5 years in a larger 500 bed central hospital in Karlstad, Region of Värmland, Sweden as acting Head of Acute care and Trauma surgery. I am familiar with all aspects of abdominal surgery. I also have some experience from vascular access surgery, microsurgery and thoracic surgical experience from organ donation and experimental cardiovascular transplant surgery (Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC, USA). I hold a PhD degree and have continuously been active in teaching of mainly medical students, residents, post graduate specialists, but also of other medical staff. I have furthermore been an Associate Professor of Surgery connected to Aarhus, Aalborg and Copenhagen Universities in Denmark. I was as a Director of Teaching responsible for medical students from Örebro University during their surgical rotation in Karlstad.

My initial main focus after becoming a specialist has been abdominal transplant and HPB surgery, mainly cancer surgery and complicated bile duct problems. I am also proficient with laparoscopic surgery (cholecystectomies, appendectomies, gastrointestinal perforations, drain placements, staging, laparoscopic ultrasounds, laparoscopic hernia surgery, colon mobilization). I do perform perioperative Radiofrequency Ablations (RF), perioperative ultra sound, FAST ultrasound in trauma situations as well laparoscopic ultrasound. I also perform endoscopies; mainly gastroscopies, but also colonoscopies. I am performing minor surgical procedures, proctology and treatment of varicose veins. In 1999, I did a clinical rotation for 3 months with the trauma team at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York. I have worked several years in large university hospitals in Sweden, The Netherlands, Germany and Denmark that provide level 1 trauma care with anywhere from 700 000 to 5 million people in the catchment area. Several off them among the 100 best hospitals in the world.

After I became a specialist, I worked 4.5 years in Gothenburg, Sweden, at the Sahlgrenska Transplant Institute as a staff surgeon with abdominal transplantation, access and HB surgery. 2009-2011, I did a 2-rota UEMS accredited fellowship in HPB and Liver transplantation at UMCG, Groningen, Holland (the only institution in Europe offering an American type of fellowship of this kind at that time). Thereafter I have worked as a consultant surgeon with focus on mainly HPB surgery, especially liver. Mainly because of increasing centralization in Denmark of upper GI cancer surgery, few available positions in Scandinavia in HPB surgery together with the lower compensation in such positions, I decided to work in private practice 2016 and as a freelance consultant surgeon in Denmark and Sweden. I returned back to the public healthcare sector in 2018. Since then, I have mainly worked with Acute care and Trauma surgery, while still also being responsible for upper GI oncological cases and also operating some benign, elective, cases. The position in Karlstad as a senior consultant included covering on calls 1-2 times/week plus being on call for trauma cases on an almost daily basis. The hospital has some 350 000 people in the catchment area (for some functions 800 000-900 000) and upgraded functions due to the geographical location. Moreover, my function as acting head for the section of Acute care & Trauma surgery involved planning of the daily activities, writing guidelines, organizing M&Ms, supervising residents and staff surgeons in clinical work, educating nurses and interacting with other departments etc. I also had some clinical research projects ongoing. The position in Riyadh at HMG Al Sahafa included general surgical as well as trauma cases. Moreover, I have worked part time as a subcontractor and organization consultant with healthcare/provider care issues.

On a personal level I am positive, respectful, have a strong work ethics and like to take on new challenges in life. In my spare time I interact with my family, go to the gym, play tennis, sail and ski during the winters. I speak English fluently as well as German, Czech and the Scandinavian languages Swedish, Danish and Norwegian. I can also speak some Dutch on a conversational level as well as some minimal French. I can some basic Arabic phrases and words of relevance to my profession.

I have been in the DHA registry 2023 and the PSP process of reentering should be finished within a week. I would be happy to provide references, log books and other documents as needed.
