Detailed Profile

To whom it may concern,

I am 51 years old Swedish national and have 25 years of clinical experience as a surgeon. I am a specialist in General Surgery since 2004. I am board certified in General, Abdominal Transplant and HPB surgery. I am a registered specialist in Holland, Germany (Fachartz), Sweden, Norway and Denmark. I have been working 11 years after I became a specialist in tertiary referral units with more than 1000 beds and anywhere from 6500 to 17 000 employees (I did 4 years of my residency at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital and 3.5 years in larger county hospitals (Borås and Varberg) with 700-1000 beds). The last 3 years I have been working both in private practice and the last 16 months in a larger 350 bed county hospital on the Island of Zealand, Denmark, with 220 000 in the catchment area. I am familiar with all aspects of abdominal surgery. I also have some experience form vascular access surgery and thoracic surgical experience from organ donation and experimental cardiovascular transplant surgery (Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC, USA). I hold a PhD degree and have continuously been active in teaching of mainly medical students, residents, but also off other medical staff. I have been a senior lecturer/associate professor of surgery connected to Aarhus, Aalborg University and now lately Copenhagen University in Denmark.

My main focus after becoming a specialist has been abdominal transplant and HPB surgery, mainly cancer surgery and complicated bile duct problems. I am also experienced with laparoscopic surgery (cholecystectomies, appendectomies, gastrointestinal perforation, suturing, drain placements, staging, laparoscopic ultrasounds, laparoscopic hernia surgery). I do perform perioperative Radiofrequency Ablations (RF), preoperative ultrasound, FAST ultrasound in trauma situations as well laparoscopic ultrasound. I also perform endoscopies; mainly gastroscopies, but also colonoscopies. I am also familial with minor surgical procedures, proctology and treatment of varicose veins. In 1999, I did a clinical rotation for 3 months with the trauma team at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York.

After I became a specialist, I worked 4.5 years in Gothenburg, Sweden, at the Sahlgrenska Transplant Institute as a staff surgeon with abdominal transplantation, access and HB surgery. 2009-2011, I did a 2-rota UEMS accredited fellowship in HPB and Liver transplantation at UMCG, Groningen, Holland (the only institution in Europe offering an American type of fellowship of this kind at that time). Thereafter I have worked as a Consultant surgeon with focus on mainly HPB surgery, especially liver. Mainly because of increasing centralization in Denmark of upper GI cancer surgery and few available positions in Scandinavia in HPB surgery together with lower salary in such positions, I started to work in private practice as a freelance consultant surgeon in Denmark and Sweden. Currently I work in a larger county hospital (350 beds) with mainly elective gallbladder and hernia surgery along with endoscopies plus cover on call 1-2 times/week. Moreover, I am main responsible for all patients with upper gastrointestinal cancer. Furthermore, I work partly as a subcontractor as an organizational expert in the Health care/provider care area.

I could see myself in different size of hospitals. Both in a larger or teaching hospital where I could keep on working with more advanced surgery, teach, but I am also willing to consider also more general surgical positions. If an interesting job with an attractive compensation package could be found, I would be able to start on a contract with 3 months notice. I am underway to apply for a license to practice in UAE trough a Dubai based company (Allocation Assist UAE).

On a personal level I have fiancé that is willing to relocate with me and we are planning to get married in the end of this year. I am positive, respectful, have a strong work ethics and like to take on new challenges in life. In my spare time I go to the gym, play tennis, sail and ski during the winters. I speak English fluently as well as German, Czech and the Scandinavian languages Swedish, Danish and Norwegian. I can also speak some Dutch on conversational level as well as some minimal French.

Yours truly,
Daniel Lukes
